I'm putting this in the "political" group only because small town politics are the bare bones basics of our country. Oro Valley, Arizona is a beautiful place. Northwest of Tucson, the view of the Catalina Mountains dominates the scenery from almost every street or "paseo" in town. Once a sleepy, retirement sort of a place, now it hums with growth and vibrancy. Reportedly, this is one of the fastest growing spots in Arizona, which in itself is one of the top two states for growth this decade. The town council is moving forward with plans and lots of good things but two of their pet projects have gotten a lot of ranting, town denizens up in arms. First, a new crematory was okayed and man, you'd think the residents were of the mind that they were never going to die. NIMBY! The cries went out all around, despite the fact that there is already a crematorium in Oro Valley. It's been there for years. Now, word is out that the new, Oro Valley Townsite is going to have as an anchor, none other than Walmart. This is a publicly supported, supposedly elite shopping center. The residents were promised a "high end" retailer for anchor and now, lo and behold, ta da....Wally World rears it's ugly head again. One letter to the local newspaper, The EXPLORER, mentioned the fact that, once the new one is built, if you live in Oro Valley, you will be able to drive to 3 Wally Worlds in less than 5 minutes. Now, I am the last person to push for elitism. However, Wally World sickens me and Oro Valley citizens rightly protest the hoax perpetrated on them to bring this pariah to the area. There are dozens of other retailers that would love to open in this area, why is the council favoring the one most likely to cause a revolt? Big money, my friends. Big Money.
