I've spent a long time and effort to eliminate salt from most of the food I eat. My mother and father put salt on every meal and, really, it was my mom's most used spice. I think a lot of people are like that and some of them are still pouring it on. Since I was very young, I started paying attention to people when they said that salt makes you retain water. So, systematically, I eliminated it almost totally from my cooking and completely from the table. I substituted "Spike", which is full of salt but it's not called salt. See, I can justify anything. One thing that Spike doesn't have is iodine, at least I find no mention of it anywhere on the bottle or website. Iodine is important and people have probably been getting a lot of the necessary daily allotment of iodine from table salt for generations. The reason I bring this up is that I read an article in First magazine about iodine this week,(Sept.22,2008). This magazine always has lots of health info, recipes, that sort of thing. This particular article is a lot like every article in the mag, some woman, some problem and voila! the answer all in 1,000 words or less!
It got me to thinking though, if people have long pulled their daily dosage from table salt and I don't use the stuff, maybe I should pay some attention here. I read about his problem in another source a few weeks ago but this sort of drove it home. They both said that not getting enough of the mineral can make a person chronically fatigued and depressed. I'm thinking that upping my intake on this can't be a bad thing. Some ways to get the mineral include eating more of iodine rich foods like eggs, shrimp, tuna and cod plus unpeeled baked potatoes. I have started just adding a shot to a short glass of water. Supplements are also available, this article suggests that 150mcg is about right and it also says that vitamin A is helpful in absorption and its ability to synthesize thyroid hormones. A doctor was quoted here, Dr. Ann Haiden, D.O.from Kentfield, CA.
All of this is interesting and makes me see that there are several strings to pull in order to make myself feel better. So far I have added a prescription for thyroid problems, adrenal support supplements, vitamins A,B and C, plus this new addition, iodine. Well, I'll either be the healthiest person you know or the the sickest, before long!
